Robert Lepage , CC , OQ (born December 12, 1957 in Quebec City ) is a Canadian theater director . He also works as a film director , actor , screenwriter and film producer .

Life and accomplishments

From 1975 to 1978 Lepage studied theater at the Conservatoire d'art dramatique in the city of Québec. He mainly works as a theater director. He heads the theater company ExMachina , which he founded in 1993. He wrote the stage plays Tectonic Plates and The Other Side of the Moon , both of which were filmed with his participation. The seven-armed Ota , which is the so-called Hiroshima - Theresienstadt project, won the prize for the best Quebec performance at the Masques Awards .

Robert Lepage's theater productions appear at all major theater festivals in Europe, Australia, Japan and America.

His international theater project Lipsynch , with nine actors from Canada, Great Britain, Spain, Germany and the USA, was played in a first version in 2007 in England, Spain and Canada. The premiere of the full version (nine hours) took place on September 6, 2008 in London in the Barbican Center, followed by guest appearances in Madrid, Le Havre, Sydney, Toronto, Moscow, New York, Montreal, Taipei, Melbourne, etc. a. All performances were celebrated with standing ovations by the audience.

With his production Eonnagata , which premiered in March 2009 in London, he made a guest appearance at the Berlin Festival in November 2009.

Lepage received numerous awards for his work. He was also awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Canada .

In 1995 he won the award for the best Canadian screenplay for the film Confessionnal at the Vancouver International Film Festival . In 1996 he received a Genie Award for Best Director and the Claude Jutra Award for Confessionnal , his film directing debut . There have also been seven genius nominations for different films over the years. In 1998, Lepage was recognized as the best Canadian feature film at the Toronto International Film Festival for the film . In 2001 the special prize at the Prix ​​Jutra for the film Possible Worlds followed . For the film drama The Other Side of the Moon Lepage received the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2004 Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section . From 2010 to 2012 Lepage directed the performances of all four parts of Richard Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen at the Metropolitan Opera in New York . The film director Susan Fränke shot the film Wagner's Dream , which premiered in April 2012 , about the work on this performance program . With Playing Cards 1: Spades he was invited to the Ruhrtriennale in 2012 and to the Wiener Festwochen in 2013 .
