Passion: Music for The Last Temptation of Christ is a film soundtrack by Peter Gabriel that was released in 1989. It is his second soundtrack and his eighth album in total. It was originallycompiledfor the1988film The Last Temptation by Martin Scorsese . Peter Gabriel developed the music even further after the premiere of the film and released a full album instead of a film soundtrack. The album marks a milestone in the popularity of world music and won a Grammy Award for Best New Age Album in1990. It wasreissuedas remastered in 2002 with the original recordings.

album

For the soundtrack of the film, Peter Gabriel used the resources of the organization WOMAD , which he founded to bring musicians from the Middle East, Africa and South Asia together. He worked with them to enhance the mood of the film, but also added a modern ambient music arrangement , which has influenced many contemporary musicians. The album made musicians such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan , Youssou N'Dour , L. Shankar , Doudou N'Diaye Rose and Baaba Maal known to a wider audience.

A little later in 1989 an additional album was released under the name Passion - Sources , which contains other songs in which Peter Gabriel does not play. He describes this album as a selection of traditional music, sources of inspiration and on-location recordings.

The cover was designed with the collage Drawing study for Self Image II (1987) by Julian Grater from 1987.
