In the course of his career, East played the role of Leland Sklar as a live bassist for various artists . In the late 1990s he played with Phil Collins on the Live and Loose Tour, after Sklar was a permanent member of his live band for years. On Collins' farewell tour (The First Farewell Tour), Sklar finally played bass again. After Sklar replaced the sick bassist Mike Porcaro at Toto in 2007 , East again took on the role of Sklar on Toto's short tours from 2010 to 2013.
