Reptile is the 14th studio album by British rock guitarist Eric Clapton . It was released in 2001 under the labels Reprise and Duck. Billy Preston and The Impressions appeared on the album for the first time . Clapton introduced the album on the Reptile World Tour .

The album cover shows a smiling Clapton from his childhood. On the back and in the booklet there are family pictures of the artist, who turned 56 shortly after publication. Under the photos, Clapton explains the album title: "Where I come from, the word" reptile "is a nickname [...]". ("Where I come from, the word 'reptile' is a term of endearment [...]"). Clapton dedicated the album to his uncle.

Reception and awards

Allmusic critic William Ruhlmann said that "the album does not live up to Clapton's claims and is not as good as he might have hoped." Overall, Ruhlmann gave two and a half out of five possible ratings for the album. The album reached number two on the album charts in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In the UK, Reptile reached number seven on the UK album charts. In the United States, the album was number five on the Billboard 200 and number one on the top Internet album charts. In Canada, the album reached number eleven on the top Canadian album charts. The album was awarded a platinum record in Germany and sold more than 955,000 copies worldwide.

Awards for music sales

In 2001 the album was awarded a gold record by the Bundesverband Musikindustrie (BVMI) for more than 150,000 records sold in Germany. In the same year IFPI Switzerland awarded the album for more than 25,000 units sold in their country. In the United States, Reptile has been awarded a gold record by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for more than half a million sales and in the United Kingdom by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) for more than 100,000 sales each. In total, the album received seven gold and one platinum records and sold more than 1.18 million copies worldwide.
