The Japan Residency Tour [ ʤəˈpæn ˈrɛzɪdənsi tʊə ] ( English : "Japan Stay Tour") was a concert tour by British rock musician Eric Clapton . During the tour, the Briton played a series of just five concerts that took place exclusively in Tokyo , Japan . The tour began on April 13, 2016 in Nippon Budōkan and ended there on April 19 of the same year.

During the tour, Clapton wore a mixture of blues titles such as Key to the Highway , Hoochie Coochie Man and Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out , popular hit songs such as Circus Left Town , I Shot the Sheriff , Wonderful Tonight and Cocaine and new pieces from the studio album I Still Do , released in May 2016 . The band line-up was almost identical to that of the previous tours.

In total, the Brit appeared in front of more than 67,000 viewers and took in more than 8.3 million US dollars .

Tour events

The tour was announced on November 16, 2015, a few months after the release of the compilation album Forever Man . Advance ticket sales began to the general public on December 5, 2015, after exclusive offers for members of promoter Udo Artists, Inc. Japan ended. The concerts were presented by both Udo Artists, Inc. Japan and Martin Guitars . All concerts were completely sold out within a few days.

During the second half of the first concert on April 13th, Clapton invited 25-year-old pop star Ed Sheeran on stage and carried the titles I Will Be There , Cypress Grove and Sunshine State with him . Sheeran used an Eric Clapton signature guitar from Martin for his guest appearance . Clapton switched from his artist model, with which he also appeared, to the signature model by Sheeran entitled Cypress Grove . The concert marked the first appearance of the two Brits as well as the first appearance of the multi-instrumentalist Dirk Powell with Clapton's band. Rhythm guitarist Andy Fairweather Low sang the blues title Gin House , as he did on the Pilgrim World Tour

The four subsequent concerts at Nippon Budōkan took place without guest musicians, but with the same setlist and band line-up. Clapton reported in his touring program: “I'm back even though I didn't want to. I actually officially resigned, but I haven't found out what that actually means yet. So I thought to myself that while I find out, it would be nice to come back and visit all my friends in Tokyo […] ”.
