Forever Man -

Forever Man is a compilation album by British rock musician Eric Clapton . It was released on April 28, 2015 under the Reprise Records label.

Content and design

The compilation includes tracks that Eric Clapton has released as a solo artist under the record company Reprise Records for over 30 years . Both studio and live recordings are included on the double CD and digital release. The 3-CD set also features blues recordings by the artist. Clapton's Grammy Award winning tracks Bad Love , Change the World and Tears in Heaven as well as tracks from Grammy Award winning albums From the Cradle and Unplugged are part of the album. A previously unreleased live version of Cocaine from the recording sessions of 24 Nights is also on the album. It was recorded on February 18, 1991 at the Royal Albert Hall . The liner notes are from rock journalist and author Malcolm Dome. The front cover shows Clapton with a Martin 000-28EC Brazilian Rosewood acoustic guitar in a forest. Clapton used a similar image in 2007 in his autobiography Mein Leben . The cover was photographed by Christopher Simon Sykes. On the first side of the CD box is a photo of the iconic Gibson ES-335 Cherry Red , which Clapton played in his time with Cream and again during his blues tour in 1994. Four photos of Clapton's stage performance from the 80s, 90s and 2000s follow. These were made during the Journeyman World Tour and come from the concert films Live in Hyde Park from 1996 and Live from Madison Square Garden from 2009 as well as the music video for Blue Eyes Blue from 1999. Lisa Glines and Stephen Walker were responsible for the design of the publication. In addition to Sykes, Danny Clinch, David Corio, Antoine Gyori, Michael Hashimoto, Gregory Malphurs, Jeffrey Mayer, Kevin Mazur, and Neal Preston contributed images to Forever Man .

Occupation, production, marketing

The musicians to be heard on the album were not listed in the compilation, but correspond to the line-up of the original publications. The compilation album was produced by Steve Woolard. As production manager Jo Blair worked. Project assistants were Kate Dear and Tim Fraser Harding. The American artist Chris Carlson, who specializes in 3D chalk painting, interpreted the album cover by drawing Clapton, including his guitar and tree trunk, entirely out of chalk. The work was recorded in a time lapse . A faster and shortened version of the video was mainly used for internet advertising. A second advertising film for internet and television consisted of recordings of various music videos; among others on the titles Wonderful Tonight and Behind the Mask . A narrator gave information about the songs and the album in cutscenes. In Mexico , an advertising campaign was launched in the daily newspaper El Universal , which ran for two weeks and is estimated to have half a million readers. The promotion for the album consisted of the cover of the publication as well as a selection of the songs contained on the publication. In the Japanese cities of Tokyo , Yokohama and Osaka , the album was not only marketed in newspapers, but also on the streets. So were buses painted with the cover of the album and posted posters at bus stops. The album was also during the 70th Birthday Celebration -Tournee in 2015 promoted .

Criticism

SWR1 music expert Günter Schneidewind described the compilation in the program Kaffee oder Tee as an “opulent work” and found that Forever Man was Clapton's “life's work”. Music critic Peter Hollecker of the website My Revelations praises the intensity and scope of the album, but misses a "chronological red thread" and songs from Clapton's early career. The rock critic Dennis Sahl gave the album the maximum number of 5 points and was very positive about the appearance: “For those who do not have all of the Clapton CDs of the last 30 years on their shelf,“ Forever Man ”is an absolute buyer's tip. The price is extremely fair and the combination is convincing. The mix of live and studio recordings is also extremely successful. And maybe the album will also give those who have not yet heard Clapton's music access to the work of the British musician. ”Critics of the music website Allmusic find that the blues CD is a“ nice addition to studio and live recordings ”. Although the “CD distribution makes theoretical sense”, according to the critics, it is “a bit strange in practice” because the titles switch between “so many eras”. It is also criticized that there are no successful tracks from the 70s on the album. It was stated that Forever Man is a "little screwed up [e] compilation" and offers a lot for the money. However, in the end there would be “more questions than answers”. Finally, the critics assigned 3.5 of the 5 possible evaluation units. The critic Michael Köhler of the music magazine Classic Rock awarded 9 out of 10 points for Forever Man .

“An excellent and cleverly put together overview, which fans Clapton's exceptional position and his irrepressible desire to explore more than just a single genre in a dazzling dance that has more to offer than a pale string of hits. That has style and class. "

- Frank Ipach : Hooked on Music

Hal Horowitz of the American songwriter thinks that the release contains a few diamonds , but does not really fit into Clapton's voluminous catalog. Overall, he rated the compilation 3 out of 5 stars. Journalist Alex Hudson of the Canadian music magazine Exclaim praises the fact that the compilation is not just a compilation of the usual hits, but covers different areas. Kriktiker Jan Woelfer from Triggerfish thinks that the compilation is "plain and simple". He further emphasizes that there is “an incentive to buy the appearance”, but unreleased live recordings on the “live CD have created more incentive”. In terms of music, he gave 5 out of 6 points for the album and 3 out of 6 units for the concept of Forever Man . Critics of CD Starts find that the compilation "gives a really comprehensive insight into the work of the Englishman, in which no phase is left out". They gave 8 out of 10 points.
