Cover versions

The rock band Mason Proffit covered the song for the 1972 album Rockfish Crossing . Lynyrd Skynyrd interpreted the song for the albums Second Helping (1974) and One More from the Road (1976). In the same year, a version of the song by Johnny Cash and John Carter Cash appeared on Water from the Wells of Home . John Mayer covered the track in 2013 for his album Paradise Valley .

Versions by Eric Clapton

Eric Clapton played the song during the Basel session in 2013. In 2014 he recorded the song for his JJ Cale tribute album The Breeze - An Appreciation of JJ Cale . On June 6 of the same year, Clapton posted a lyric video for the song on his YouTube channel. The official music video for the title appeared twenty days later. In the first sequence of the video, many images from Cale are shown in fast-forward mode. After a few seconds you can see Clapton waiting on the street with a cardboard sign in his hand that reads "Escondido" and a guitar case and is taken away by a car. Cale holds the same sign on the cover of The Road to Escondido album . Some scenes in which Clapton plays guitar and sings the title alternate with the main sequence. As the video progresses, there is a dialogue between the driver of the car and Clapton, in which Clapton describes Cale as a “fantastic guy and great musician” and as his “hero”. The video ends with an excerpt from the artists' joint appearance at the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2004 .
