Backtrackin ' (alternatively as: Back Trackin' or Backtrackin '· History ) is a double compilation album by British rock musician Eric Clapton . It was first released in May 1984 under the Starblend record label (821 937-1) and is Clapton's seventh best-of album. The release includes Clapton's most popular songs with the bands Cream , Blind Faith , Derek and the Dominos as well as solo up to the release of the live album Just One Night .

publication

First, the album, pressed in Germany, was released in the typical regions of Europe at the time , including Germany, Spain , France , the Netherlands , Great Britain , Greece , Portugal and Poland . In the United States of America and Canada , the album was only available as an import . After the huge commercial success of a previous compilation called Timepieces: The Best of Eric Clapton , who was deposed more than 13.4 million records worldwide, the record company decided Polydor Records to secure the distribution rights to the album and in both Australia and New Zealand as also sell Asia in Japan and South Korea . In China , the album was not released for sale. The original version appeared on vinyl , compact disc and music cassette formats . Today the album is also available for digital music download .

The original record was divided differently on each side. The pieces 1-6 (CD 1) were referred to the LP as "Singles", the songs 7-11 (CD 1) as "History (story) " on the second page, the third side pieces 1-6 (CD 2 ) as "classics (Vintage) " and page four shots live was equipped with. The same classification can also be found on the CDs and is responsible for the alternative titles of the release. The production of the album on record and cassette was discontinued in the late 1990s.

The critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine of the music website Allmusic describes the publication as an "ambitious attempt to show an overview of Clapton's 20-year career at the time" and notes that the division of the musical topics on the A and B sides is "a bit tricky" in some places because some of the "classics" are pure hit songs and not all hits, especially from Clapton's time with The Yardbirds or The Bluesbreakers, can be found on the compilation. In conclusion, the critic awards the work 3.5 out of 5 stars and describes Backtrackin ' as "a generally good publication on Clapton's first two decades of his career". Billboard journalist Moira McComrick rated the album 4 out of 5 stars and described Backtrackin ' as "great".

Chart placements

Backtrackin ' could not build on a great commercial success like the previous compilations and millionaire sellers The History of Eric Clapton or Timepieces: The Best of Eric Clapton . In Europe, the release reached number 79 on the Dutch album charts, the Dutch Charts , and dropped out of the hit parade after just one week. In the UK, the album debuted at number 37 on the Official Charts Company's chart in late June. After reaching the top position 29 three weeks later, the album got out of the British music charts after a total of 16 weeks . On March 31, 2017, the album's CD release of December 31, 1993 was awarded a Silver Record for sales of more than 60,000 units in the UK. In New Zealand , the album reached position 35 and remained on the Recording Industry Association's charts for a total of four weeks and was later awarded a platinum record for 15,000 records sold.
