Roger Linn (born August 24, 1955 in Whittier , California ) is a developer of electronic musical instruments, mainly for drum computers [ ˈdɹʌmkəmˌpjuːtɚ ], but also for effect pedals . His products have been used for many famous recordings. He is also an accomplished guitarist and music producer .

Roger Linn was best known for the first programmable sample-based drum computer (1979), the Linn LM-1 , manufactured by his own company, Linn Electronics , based in Tarzana , Los Angeles County , California . The samples come from the drummer James Gadson. The LM-1 successors, LinnDrum and Linn 9000 , became typical of 1980s music. Examples of the LM-1 can be found on The Ballad of Dorothy Parker and When Doves Cry by Prince .

Linn Electronics closed in 1986 when Linn was hired by Akai to develop their Music Production Center models, Akai MPC 60 through Akai MPC 3000 . Most Linn products used the then new MIDI technology for synchronicity and connection to electronic musical instruments such as keyboards and some computers at the time .

In 2008 Roger Linn developed a drum machine there, announced as LINNDRUM II (previously BOOMCHIK in 2007) together with Dave Smith. Dave Smith himself had classified his announcement in 2008 as too premature and is coming to the winter NAMM 2011 with the finished product under the name TEMPEST .
