Money and Cigarettes is the eighth studio album by British guitarist Eric Clapton . It was released in 1983. On the cover he can be seen with a cigarette and a melting Fender Stratocaster . Clapton chose the name for this album because after his first alcohol withdrawal he had nothing but money and cigarettes.

background

After a North American tour, Clapton and his band at the time, consisting of Henry Spinetti , Gary Brooker , Chris Stainton and Dave Markee, went to Compass Point Studios in the Bahamas to record pieces for a new album. For Clapton, the songs had a “pub atmosphere” and were a continuation of what he had been working on with Ronnie Lane . Producer Tom Dowd was not happy with the musicians, however, and advised Clapton to replace everyone except Albert Lee . As a result, the band was released, and Donald Dunn , Roger Hawkins and Ry Cooder joined them. Clapton suffered a breakdown while recording .
