The Clapton World Tour [ klæptʌn wɜːld tʊə ] ( English for: "Clapton World Tour") was a concert tour by British rock musician Eric Clapton in 2010 and 2011. The tour began on February 13, 2010 in London and ended on December 10 2011 in Tokyo . The tour marked Clapton's first concerts in South America since the Reptile World Tour in 2001 and more intense concert dates since the Doyle & Derek World Tour in 2006 and 2007.

As part of the tour, Clapton invited the artists Jeff Beck and Steve Winwood for various legs of the tour, which accompanied him for months. In total, Clapton played more than 90 concerts during the tour on four continents . The Briton did not have to cancel or postpone any of his concerts. In contrast to previous tours in the 2000s, Clapton decided in 2010 and 2011 to hold fewer concerts, but in larger arenas.

The British rock musician presented a studio album Clapton and partly the live album Live from Madison Square Garden . In total, the Briton traveled to 26 countries in ten months of intensive tour in around two years and performed in front of over a million people. Meanwhile, total revenues of more than 103 million US dollars were achieved. After a year off, Clapton went on tour again in 2013 .

It was Clapton's most extensive tour since 2011.

Tour events

The concert tour was announced on December 1, 2009. The tour began in mid-February with Clapton and Beck in London and later took the duo to the United States and Canada . Almost all concerts there were sold out. The first leg of the tour lasted until mid-March. Up to then 17 concerts had been completed. The tour with Winwood was announced on May 11, 2010. It started just a week after the announcement. Almost all European concerts were sold out within a very short time. During the tour, Clapton visited countries like Turkey , Serbia and, for the first time, Romania .

After a short break, Clapton organized the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010 on June 26, 2010 in Bridgeview. Two days later he played as a "Hedline Performer" at the Milwaukee Summer Festival as an independent artist. After three more concerts in the USA, the tour came to a standstill. On August 18, 2010, Clapton announced its eponymous studio album. In mid-February 2011 Clapton continued his tour with sold-out concerts in the United Arab Emirates , Singapore, Thailand , China and South Korea . From late February to early March, the Brit appeared nine times in North America. From May to June Clapton toured Europe again and played at the Norwegian Wood Festival in front of 8,000 visitors.

From October 6th to 16th, Clapton visited the continent of South America after a 10-year absence. As during his Journeyman World Tour 1990 and the Reptile World Tour 2001, these concerts were also largely sold out in 2011. Clapton played for the fourth time in his career at Morumbi Stadium in front of 70,000 (in 1990 there were three concerts with 80,000 visitors each). Clapton returned to River Plate Stadium for the third time. In Chile, the Briton did not appear in the Estadio Nacional for the first time , but in a covered hall. From mid-November to mid-December Clapton traveled extensively in Japan and played 13 concerts in the country until the end of the tour on December 10th.

Due to the high demand, a total of three previously unplanned concerts were added to the calendar during the tour. These were the concert on June 1, 2011 in the Royal Albert Hall, a concert on October 10, 2011 in Rio de Janeiro and the concert on December 10, 2011 in Tokyo. In Asia, Clapton played to more than 165,000 people and grossed more than $ 15 million. In South America there were 172,000 visitors and more than 12 million US dollars. In North America, the Brit made more than 33 million US dollars in revenue and performed in front of an audience of more than 352,000. With ticket sales of more than 43 million US dollars and more than 396,000 tickets sold, the tour in Europe was the most successful.

Setlist

The setlist was changed several times during the tour. For his touring segment with Jeff Beck, Clapton performed ten to eleven pieces as a solo artist with his band. The Briton sang a mixture of blues and old hit songs; He played Driftin 'Blues , Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out , Key to the Highway , Little Queen of Spades , Running on Faith , I've Got a Rock' n 'Roll Heart , I Shot the Sheriff, among others and cocaine . Beck performed instrumental pieces during the tour. At the end of each concert, the two guitarists performed a selection of songs that they both knew well. For example, they performed the titles Shake Your Money Maker and Crossroads .

At most of the concerts in the second half of the tour, these were no longer divided into segments. Clapton and Winwood played around 20 to 22 tracks each night from start to finish as a duo. Again, a variety of blues titles such as Pearly Queen , Driftin 'Blues and How Long were performed. Winwood and Clapton also performed several songs from their time together at Blind Faith ; for example, they played Presence of the Lord and Can't Find My Way Home as part of the tour. The duo also presented songs like Glad and Split Decision from the album Live from Madison Square Garden . Clapton hits like Forever Man , Layla and After Midnight were also part of the setlist. During the North American performances, the set list was shortened to typically 16 pieces.

In 2011, the Briton usually performed 18 songs in one evening. In addition to blues pieces and hit songs, Clapton performed songs from his studio album Clapton , which was announced in August 2010, for the first time during the tour . The setlist now consisted of pieces like Hoochie Coochie Man , Goin 'Down Slow , Before You Accuse Me and reinterpretations like Rockin' Chair , When Somebody Thinks You're Wonderful and River Runs Deep from the studio album. Hits like Old Love , I Shot the Sheriff , Badge and Wonderful Tonight returned to the setlist. These songs were retained until the end of the tour. When Winwood returned, the 2010 setlist was used.

Equipment

The 2008 Fender Stratocaster in "Daphne Blue" in 2011.

Clapton mainly used his signature model of the type Fender Stratocaster in the color "Daphne Blue" (light blue) during the tour. The guitar was specially made at the request of Clapton in 2008. Two were built. The guitar was specially made at the request of Clapton in 2008. Another electric guitar from the Eric Clapton series in the color “Pewter” (silver-gray) was used less often. During a concert in Rio de Janeiro, the British rock musician used a signature model, which was decorated by Fender with the logo of the New York City Fire Department as a memento of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 . Why Clapton used the guitar is unclear.

For songs that Clapton played with an acoustic guitar , the model “OOO-28EC” from the Martin Eric Clapton Signature Series was used in a natural processing. Clapton used the Fender Noiseless pickups in his Stratocaster, which reduce hum and noise. These are part of the standard version of a Clapton model. The pickups in the acoustic guitar were installed by Fishman and Martin for Clapton below the guitar neck. For individual performances in 2011, the Briton also used a Gibson Guitar Corporation guitar . For example, for a jazz version of Layla, Clapton used a Gibson ES-335 in the color "Dark Sunburst" (color gradient from black to yellow).

All electric guitars were strung with strings of thicknesses .10 to .46 made by Ernie Ball . All acoustic guitars were equipped with phosphor bronze strings from Martin in thicknesses .12 to .54. Hard picks that were engraved with either Clapton's name or the tour name were also made by Ernie Ball. Clapton used Fender tweed twin amps.

In addition, printed T-shirts, jackets and handbags were sold.

reception

Critic Scott Mervis Pittsburgh of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette praised Clapton's performance on February 25, 2010 and said that "Clapton doesn't have to prove anything more". His version of the title Layla in particular had a “very special trick factor”, which the audience could also hear. Music journalist Aaron Ladage of the Kansas City Pitch said at the Clapton concert on March 3, 2010: “My work as a critic of music requires looking for mistakes and positives during a performance. But there was no negative to be found. This incredible Eric Clapton didn't make a single mistake. How can you not like a concert like that. Especially when fucking Daltrey is the opening act. [...] ".

Las Vegas Review-Journal writer Jason Bracelin commented on the March 5, 2011 concert, noting that "after this performance, no one can doubt the legacy and skill of Clapton [...]". He also particularly praised Layla's performance . San Diego Union-Tribune critic George Varga said that Clapton looked a little uncomfortable during his concert at Valley View Casino Center, but did not disappoint. The journalist said that Clapton was "very solid, as always, but not outstanding". Varga mainly praised Clapton's guitar playing, including his enormously long, improvised passages.

Michael Collins of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer summed up Clapton's concert on February 28, 2011: “Clapton's inimitable talent on the guitar was given to him, but his voice was just as strong and stable throughout the evening. Additionally, Clapton has received solid support from his band, particularly Tim Carmon who was brilliant. Clapton chose a good change from new songs and hits for the evening, but looked best when he got lost in the blues [...] ”. The Independent's Enjoli Liston critic praised the performance of the songs on the Clapton album in the Royal Albert Hall. Clapton also interpreted the blues songs "excellently".

Publications

On November 8, 2010, the DVD and Blu-ray Disc for the Crossroads Guitar Festival 2010 were released under Rhino and Warner Bros. Records for worldwide territories. The concert was recorded as part of the Clapton World Tour on June 26, 2010. The publication, which is also partially listed under "Various Artists", consists of two video carriers and has 40 titles by over 20 different artists. In addition to the album and video for Play the Blues: Live from Jazz at Lincoln Center , which was recorded in April 2011 with Wynton Marsalis at Lincoln Center , New York City, the 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival is the only official release that was recorded during the tour.

Bootlegs

With more than 60 different blackouts of the concerts on compact disc , the Clapton World Tour is one of the most frequently documented Clapton tours.

Trivia

  • Winwood and Clapton can only get to the concert in Istanbul by boat due to the large number of fans.
  • The performance in front of 70,000 people in the Morumbi Stadium was dedicated to Clapton Felipe Massa .
