The Pilgrim World Tour [ ˈpɪlgrɪm wɜːld tʊə ] ( English for: " Pilgrim World Tour") was a two-year world tour by British rock musician Eric Clapton . The concert tour, which Clapton has taken intensively through Asia, Europe and North America, began on October 7, 1997 in Seoul and ended on November 30, 1999 in Tokyo . In total, Clapton performed 106 times and did not have to cancel any of his concerts. Although Clapton traveled the continents of Europe and North America in one step, he completed his Asia concerts in two separate sections.

Throughout the tour played Clapton over 920,000 spectators and generated revenue of more than 51 million US dollars . The tour was presented in the United States by the automobile manufacturer Lexus . The Briton appeared nine times in Germany alone and received the car manufacturer Volkswagen as a sponsor and promoter. During the tour, Clapton played for the first time since the Journeyman World Tour (1989-1991) again with an orchestra . Guest musicians also invited Clapton during the tour.

Clapton wore a mix of hits like Layla and Tears in Heaven , blues titles like Before You Accuse Me and new songs from the Pilgrim album like My Father's Eyes and Circus (originally composed and recorded for the album Unplugged , 1992) and She's Gone or goin 'down slow ahead.

Tour events

Clapton began his tour with two sold-out concerts in the capital of South Korea , which he had never attended before. It wasn't until 2007 that Clapton came back to town. 13 other concerts followed in Japan , completing the first leg of the Pilgrim World Tour from October 9th to October 31st, 1997. From March to September Clapton traveled extensively across the continent of North America, performing 40 times in the United States and six times in Canada . Highlights of this tour section included three sold-out nights in New York's Madison Square Garden (45,342 visitors) and an appearance in the Sky Dome in Toronto (49,813 visitors). On September 18, 1998, Clapton's concerts in North America ended.

From October to December 1998 Clapton played 31 concerts in Europe, including nine appearances in Germany alone. These concerts were (as far as known) completely sold out. During this tour, Clapton did not appear in the Royal Albert Hall , which he otherwise regularly visited. Clapton again did not travel to any countries of the former Eastern Bloc and did not appear in Austria or Portugal . Clapton ended the third leg of his Pilgrim World Tour on December 11, 1998 with two sold out consecutive concerts in the Hanover Exhibition Center . From November 9 to November 30, 1999, Clapton played 14 concerts in Japan to conclude the tour. In 2000, the Briton appeared only sporadically and in 2001 played the Reptile World Tour .
