Clapton is the 18th studio album by British rock musician Eric Clapton and was released on September 27, 2010 under the Reprise and Warner Brothers Records labels . The album features cover versions of Clapton's favorite songs from his childhood to the present. Only the tracks Run Back to Your Side and Diamonds Made from Rain were composed for Clapton and were released as singles .

In an interview about its release, Clapton stated that he was proud of this album and had waited a long time to be able to record some of the tracks on the album. Clapton has known songs like When Somebody Thinks You're Wonderful and My Very Good Friend the Milkman since he was 6 years old, he continued: “I learned them [ the songs ] then [...] so I sing them the first Take [correct] […]; this is not a problem for me". In conclusion, Clapton formulates that Clapton is not what it should be and is therefore better. "If it surprises my fans, it only does so because it surprises me".

Numerous guest musicians took part, including JJ Cale , Sheryl Crow , Derek Trucks , Trombone Shorty , Wynton Marsalis , Doyle Bramhall II and the London Session Orchestra.

Criticism

Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described Clapton's work as follows: "He just leaned back, enjoys what he plays and records one of his best albums". Erlewine gave four and a half out of five possible rating units for the album. Billboard critics were positive about the album. Entertainment Weekly's Gret Kot gave Clapton a "C" rating . Los Angeles Times critics gave the album three and a half stars out of four. Popmatters.com's Justin Cober-Lake described the recordings as "cultured" but felt there were too many "misfires" on the album to make Clapton a great album. Cober-Lake awarded six out of ten points. David Fricke from Rolling Stone awarded four out of five stars.

The album reached number three in the German album charts and stayed in the charts for a total of 15 weeks. In Austria and Switzerland, it came in fifth and fourth. In the UK, the album landed at number seven and placed sixth on the Billboard 200 . The album was number one on the top rock album charts and number nine on the top digital album charts. In Canada , it was ranked seventh on the top Canadian album charts. The song Run Back to Your Side was nominated for a Grammy in the category Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance .

Chart success

Clapton was number 3 in the German album charts and stayed in the charts for 15 weeks. In Austria , the album reached number 5 in the charts and stayed in the Ö3 Austria Top 40 for 9 weeks . The release positioned itself at number 4 in the Swiss charts , in which the album was in for 12 weeks. In the UK, the album landed at number 7 and stayed on the Official Charts Company's album charts for 6 weeks . In the United States, Clapton reached number 6 on the Billboard 200 and stayed on the charts for 11 weeks. The album found itself at number 1 on the Billboard Top Rock Albums chart, where it stayed for 6 weeks. The album was ranked 3rd and 9th in the Billboard Tastemaker and Digital Albums charts. In Canada , it was ranked seventh on the top Canadian album charts. Clapton took further top 25 placements in France , the Netherlands , Belgium , Sweden , Finland , Norway , Denmark , Italy , Spain , New Zealand and Australia . At the end of the year, the studio album was 69th on the German album charts and 72nd on the European Top 100 album charts.
