The Reptile World Tour [ ˈrɛptaɪl wɜːld tʊə ] ( English for "Reptile World Tour") was a one-year concert tour by British rock musician Eric Clapton . The tour began on February 3, 2001 at the Royal Albert Hall and ended on December 15, 2001 at the Yokohama Arena . In addition to his hit songs, Clapton also performed new pieces from the Reptile album. The world tour consisted of 108 scheduled concerts, four of which were canceled.

The Briton appeared again in South America for the first time since the Journeyman World Tour (1989-1991). Among them, Clapton played during the 2001 tour for the first time in Russia , Venezuela and Mexico . Overall, Clapton joined more than 1.68 million visitors and took more than 80 million US dollars a. Although Clapton announced in 2001 that it would be his last major world tour, he did another major world tour in 2010 and 2011 .

Tour events

Clapton started the tour with six concerts, one of which had to be canceled on February 7th due to illness. After his stand in London, the Briton played three more concerts in the UK until mid-February. After that, Clapton traveled extensively through Europe until mid-April and again visited countries such as Portugal , Spain and Finland , in which he has so far only appeared sporadically. Clapton celebrated a premiere in Russia with the concerts on April 8th, 10th and 11th . It has not previously performed in the country. Clapton did not travel to Austria or the states of the former Eastern Bloc . As far as known, all concerts in Europe were sold out. Clapton took a break until early May.

From May to August, Clapton toured North America and played two sold-out concerts in Canada . In the United States alone, Clapton made 42 appearances and in North America alone generated revenues of 44,346,504 US dollars with 860,827 concertgoers in the United States, making the Reptile World Tour the seventh most successful concert tour in the country. On July 7th, Clapton interrupted his US tour briefly to perform with the band du Lac (including Mike Rutherford and Gary Brooker ). Highlights during the concerts in the States were two sold-out concerts at the Fleet Center, Boston and the Staples Center, Los Angeles. The three concerts in New York's Madison Square Garden were almost sold out.

In October, Clapton returned to South America for the first time since 1990. Out of 10 concerts, two had to be canceled due to disagreements with the government and the organizers in Colombia and Peru . Nevertheless, Clapton played eight completely sold-out concerts in Argentina , Brazil , Uruguay , Venezuela, Chile and Mexico. The concerts in Mexico and Venezuela were also a first for Clapton, as he had never traveled to the countries for concerts before. The most popular events included appearances at the Estadio Nacional (50,982 visitors), the Estádio do Pacaembu (62,450 visitors) and the Foro Sol (55,000 visitors). On October 20, Clapton traveled to New York to attend the concert for New York City .

With seventeen concerts in Asia, Clapton wanted to end the tour. However, the first concert on November 17th in Taiwan was canceled again due to disagreements with the promoter society. The Briton should have performed in the Zhongshan football stadium, for which the around 40,000 available tickets would have quickly sold out. The tour came to an end on December 15 with 16 concerts in Japan, including Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Tokyo and Yokohama. As far as announced, these concerts were also completely sold out. A total of 1,680,957 of 1,728,585 available tickets were sold during the entire world tour (canceled concerts not included).

Setlist

For the most part, Clapton wore his hits like Tears in Heaven , Layla , Change the World , Wonderful Tonight , Badge , I Shot the Sheriff and My Father's Eyes during the concerts , but also blues standards like Five Long Years , Hoochie Coochie Man , Have You Ever Loved a Woman , Key to the Highway and I Want a Little Girl . When the Impressions were there during a concert, Clapton also played songs like Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight and I Ain't Gonna Stand for It from the album Reptile , which contain the voices of the vocal group on the studio version. Clapton also performed songs from the Pilgrim album . A show usually ended with the songs Sunshine of Your Love and Somewhere Over The Rainbow . The Briton announced the setlist to his audience in part: “We will play some songs from the past and the present. We started with a few new ones and now comes an old one […] ”.
