Tearing Us Apart is a pop rock song written by Eric Clapton and Greg Phillinganes . The duet with Tina Turner was released on November 24, 1986 on the album August and on June 8, 1987 as a single.

The song also appeared on the concert films Live 1986 , Live in Hyde Park and Live at Montreux in 1986 and on the compilation album Clapton Chronicles: The Best of Eric Clapton . Tina Turner also published the title on the live album Tina Live in Europe .

In 1986, Clapton and Turner carried the song with an all-star band, u. a. consisting of Elton John ( grand piano ), Mark Knopfler and Phil Collins ( drums ), performed at the Prince's Trust All-Star Rock Concert at Wembley Arena . Clapton also played the song regularly in the 1990s - to unreleased recordings from 24 Nights and at the Knebworth concert in 1990.

Origin and admission

When Clapton and Lory Del Santo moved into an apartment in Berkley Square, London , Clapton, who had lived in the country for years, was annoyed by the noise and traffic in the city. In his biography he describes: "To distract myself, I stuffed the apartment with recording devices so that I could produce demos for my next album". It was during this time that Tearing Us Apart was also made - "a song that was about" the committee, "the group of Pattie's friends I accused of standing between us," said Clapton. He also underlines this in the line of the song: “They're tearing us apart” (“Your friends are tearing us apart”).

The recording took place in New York City . In addition to Eric Clapton and Tina Turner as guitarist, singer and singer, Nathan East as bassist, Phil Collins on drums and producer, and Greg Phillinganes on keyboards.

Reception and chart successes

Critic Richard Gilliam of the music website Allmusic found that Tearing Us Apart was a “carefully crafted piece of music” and “successfully exploited popular styles of the 80s”. Gilliam also mentions that the title is "pleasant". Critic William Ruhlmann noted that Clapton sings and plays guitar on the track "passionately" ("fiercely"). In 1987 the single was at number 56 on the UK singles chart and number 5 on the Billboard mainstream rock songs chart.
