Let's Stay Together is an Al Green song released in 1971 to a tune by Al Jackson, Jr. and Willie Mitchell . The recording was made for Green's album Let's Stay Together , which was released in 1972. The song was produced by Willie Mitchell and Al Green and released on the Hi Records label.

History of origin

After Mitchell Green played a rough draft of the melody he had worked out with drummer Al Jackson, Green wrote the lyrics of the song in just five minutes. Mitchell only managed to convince Green after two days to even record the song. The recording took place on a Friday evening, was pressed onto vinyl the following Monday and already entered the charts at number eight on Thursday.

The song became a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and is to date Green's only number 1 hit in the US . The song was listed at number 60 of the "500 Best Songs of All Time" by the music magazine Rolling Stone . In 1999 the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame .

The song was also used in Quentin Tarantino's film Pulp Fiction .

There are various cover versions of the song. The best known comes from Tina Turner from her 1984 album Private Dancer and was released as a single in November 1983.
