Private Dancer is a 1984 Tina Turner song written by Mark Knopfler and produced by John Carter. It appeared in the album of the same name .

history

Originally Mark Knopfler wrote the song for his band Dire Straits . It should therefore also be included on the album Love over Gold , but later Knopfler was of the opinion that a woman would be better suited to sing the song. He also used the melody of Private Dancer's chorus in the chorus of the Dire Straits title Love over Gold. The band accompanying Tina Turner are Dire Straits; instead of Mark Knopfler, the guitar solo in the song is played by Jeff Beck . The release took place on October 28, 1984 on the record label Capitol Records .

During a live appearance on BBC's Top of the Pops , Turner was not allowed to sing the line " American Express will do nicely, thank you" as there was a ban on the use of product names on the show. Instead, she sang the rewritten line: "A few pounds sterling will do nicely, thank you" (German: A few pounds sterling are also accepted, most binding thanks.)

Content of the song

The song is about a stripper or prostitute who calls herself a private dancer . She describes how empty she feels about it.
