Typical Male was pre-released as the first single by Break Every Rule in 1986 . Like its predecessors, the song was also commercially successful, reaching number two in the United States, sixth in Austria, third in Germany and second in Switzerland. In the UK, the song was less successful, reaching number 33. On the B-side of the single is the song Don't Turn Around , which was recorded by Bonnie Tyler in 1988 and later covered by Aswad and Ace of Base .

Music video
In the music video, Tina Turner wears a red mini dress and flirts with a lawyer. She plays various games with him, like chess or Scrabble, and tries to get his attention. During the video, Turner is seen hugging the legs of a statue. In one scene from the music video, Turner and the lawyer sit together on a gigantic telephone receiver. Turner jumps up and down and the lawyer on the other side then blows up. At the end of the music video, Turner and the lawyer are walking, holding hands.
