Gallagher and Lyle was a British singer-songwriter duo consisting of Benny Gallagher (vocals, guitar, piano, bass guitar, piano accordion, mandolin, ocarina, harmonica) and Graham Lyle (vocals, guitar, mandolin, banjo, violin). They are best known as a duo with their top ten hits I Wanna Stay With You and Heart on My Sleeve (1976).

Careers

At the age of 19, the two Scots Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle began to write songs together. One of their first published songs was Mr Heartbreak's Here Again , recorded by Dean Ford and the Gaylords , later Marmalade , in 1964 . In 1968, meanwhile moved to London , they were signed by Apple Records , the Beatles' music publisher , to write songs for artists like Mary Hopkin ( Sparrow , International ).

In late 1969 they joined the band McGuinness Flint ; for this they wrote the top ten hits When I'm Dead and Gone and Malt and Barley Blues .

In 1972 they separated from the other musicians of McGuinness Flint, Tom McGuinness and Hughie Flint to continue as a duo. At the same time they also played in Ronnie Lane's band Slim Chance . Their fifth album as a duo brought Gallagher and Lyle their first commercial success. The album Breakaway and I Wanna Stay With You , released as a single, both entered the UK charts in February 1976 . In the following weeks, Heart on My Sleeve also succeeded . Breakaway , the title song of their albums, had previously been given to Art Garfunkel , who published the composition on his second solo album in 1975, a year before Gallagher and Lyle, and also called it Breakaway . Garfunkel later covered the Gallagher-Lyle composition A Heart in New York . This piece was also played by Simon and Garfunkel at their Central Park Concert in 1981 , which was released as a live album in 1982.

The album released in 1979 brought Gallagher and Lyle only moderate success. In 1980 the duo's paths separated.

Lyle found a new partner author for his songs, Terry Britten , and the two of them wrote hits like What's Love Got to Do with It? for Tina Turner (for whom they received a Grammy in 1985 ) ; or Just Good Friends for Michael Jackson . He also stands as a co-author of I Should Have Known Better by Jim Diamond and Tina Turner We Do not Need Another Hero . Together with his old companion Tom McGuinness, he released the album Acting on Impulse in 1983 (as Lyle McGuinness ) .

Gallagher was later briefly a member of the Manfreds , a band that brought together several former members of Manfred Mann , including Tom McGuinness.
