The Marmalade is a British pop group that had a total of eight top 10 hits in the English singles charts between 1968 and 1976. Because of her fame, a cocktail was named after her, the "Marmaladdie".

Band history

Dean Ford & The Gaylords (1964)

The band was founded in 1961 and was initially called Dean Ford & the Gaylords . From 1964 to 1966 the quintet was elected as the top band in Scotland , which was also due to the fact that they performed almost continuously in every Scottish city. In 1967 the group took part in the Windsor Jazz Festival , where they stole the show from all other participants. A move to London followed, the name changed to The Marmalade and appearances in the famous Marquee Club .

In May 1968, Lovin 'Things achieved their first top 10 success, followed by Wait for Me Marianne in October 1968 , which however only managed to reach rank 30. The song was written by the successful British writing team Ken Howard & Alan Blaikley , who produced all of the hits of the Marmalade from December 1968 to Baby Make It Soon (June 1969). This included their biggest hit, a cover version of the Beatles song Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da , which the group performed in orange suits. So she reached number one in the British charts in early 1969 . The band's other hits included Reflections of My Life and Rainbow .

Marmalade's manager was Peter Walsh, who signed a number of successful performers and bands through the 1960s and 1970s, including the Bay City Rollers , Billy Ocean , the Troggs and Blue Mink .

The driving forces behind the band were vocalist Dean Ford and bassist Graham Knight. With the departure of Junior Campbell, a series of changes began. Drummer Alan Whitehead also left the band. Trying to switch to progressive rock had little success.

The rejuvenated band Marmalade is still on tour at oldie festivals under the direction of Graham Knight after the turn of the millennium.
