James Aaron "Jim" Diamond (born September 28, 1951 in Glasgow ; † October 8, 2015 in London ) was a British pop singer and songwriter .

Life

Jim Diamond grew up in Glasgow's East End, where he was influenced by the music of Ray Charles and Otis Redding . At the age of 14 he formed his first band . Later Jim played with "Gully Foyle" not only in England, but also on the European continent. The move to London followed. The Bandit group was founded there in 1975 . It came to a contract with Clive Davis ' Arista Records . Although the band swam against the zeitgeist of the time and was therefore quite unsuccessful, an album was released in 1977 .

Diamond then sang as a studio musician , including on the album Just Easy by Alexis Korner . The move again, this time to Los Angeles , brought the collaboration with Earl Slick , the guitarist on David Bowie's album Young Americans , and Carmine Appice from Rod Stewart's band . The three musicians went with Eddie Kramer , the legendary Jimi Hendrix - producers , to the studio to write some songs and record.

While in LA, Jim Diamond was asked to return to London to join Tony Hymas and Simon Phillips of the Jeff Beck Band in the Ph.D. to found. With the song I Won't Let You Down , released in early 1982, the first single became a worldwide success. The second album Is It Safe? contained a European hit with I Didn't Know , in which Jeff Beck could be heard on guitar.

After separating from Ph.D. Diamond signed a solo contract with A&M Records . In 1984 the single I Should Have Known Better reached number 1 on the British charts . In the same year his solo album Double Crossed was released . The single Hi Ho Silver from the second solo album Desire for Freedom also reached the British Top 10 in 1986.

In 1993 Jim Diamond got a contract with Polygram Records and played at the Edinburgh Festival . In the late 1990s he met Snake Davis from M People , with whom he shared a love of blues and soul and performed together. It was through Snake that Jim Diamond met Paul Birchall , a Hammond player . With him he recorded the album Souled and Healed . In 2011, Jim Diamond released the album City of Soul , on which Tommy Cunningham of Wet Wet Wet participated as drummer and which contained covers of soul classics.

Jim Diamond died in London on October 8, 2015 at the age of 64, leaving behind a wife and two children.
