Simon Phillips (born February 6, 1957 in London , England ) is a British drummer who has established himself musically in the fusion , rock and pop music genre. He is best known as a member of the band Toto . Phillips also works as a studio musician. His references include Asia , Jeff Beck , Peter Gabriel , Mick Jagger , Judas Priest , Gary Moore , Mike Oldfield , Joe Satriani , The Who and Lee Ritenour .

biography

At the age of three years, he learned from his father Sid Phillips , the percussion know and six years old he got his first drum set . Two years later he played for the first time in his father's band. In 1972 he made his breakthrough as a musician in the musical " Jesus Christ Superstar " and then worked as a session musician in Great Britain and the USA. In 1977 he played for the heavy metal band Judas Priest on their album Sin After Sin . Also in 1977 he played on the album How's Tricks by the former Cream bassist Jack Bruce , in 1980 on the debut album of the newly founded Michael Schenker Group , which, along with Schenker and singer Gary Barden, was recorded with high-class studio musicians, including the Keyboardist Don Airey and bassist Mo Foster had counted. In the same year he played, also with Foster, on Jeff Beck's record There and Beck . Keyboard player was Tony Hymas .

In 1981 Philipps founded the band project Ph.D. with Hymas and the singer Jim Diamond. , whose most successful single I Won't Let You Down was on radio all over Germany after it was released at the end of the year and was able to place in the German Top 20 in early 1982. He was also known to a larger audience as the drummer of Mike Oldfield on various publications, u. a. on his albums Crises (1983) and Discovery (1984), which he produced together with Oldfield and which he also accompanied on the following world tours.

In 1987, Simon Phillips was a member of Pete York's first super drumming project. In 1988 he started a solo career in jazz-rock with the release of the album Protocol , during which he has been accompanied by guitarist Ray Russell , bassist Anthony Jackson and pianist Jeff Babko, among others .

In 1989 Phillips toured with The Who , then in 1990 with Jeff Baxter ( Steely Dan , Doobie Brothers ), John Entwistle (The Who), Joe Walsh ( Eagles ) and Keith Emerson ( Emerson, Lake and Palmer ) under the band name The Best through Hawaii and Japan . An album of this line-up never came off.

In 1991 Phillips decided to leave England and move to Los Angeles (USA). Several months passed from the decision to implementation. In August 1992, just days after the death of Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro , Simon Phillips (still living in England) received a call from Steve Lukather , the guitarist of Toto. Lukather asked him if he could imagine going on a world tour with Toto. Phillips broke off all studio work, accelerated his planned move to America, and left England on August 31, 1992 for LA, where rehearsals for Toto 's tour began the next day. After the tour, Toto asked him to become a permanent member of the band. Phillips agreed and shortly afterwards began to record their new album with the band. In addition to the 1995 album Tambu , he played on six other albums with the band. In 2014, Simon Phillips separated from Toto in a friendly relationship in favor of his own solo career.

In 2014 he put his own band together with Ernest Tibbs on bass, Andy Timmons on guitar and Steve Weingart on keyboards to record the album ' Protocol II ' . This band project recorded the further album 'Protocol III ' in 2015 . Phillips toured worldwide with this band. In 2017 Phillips changed the line-up of this band project by including guitarist Greg Howe and keyboardist Dennis Hamm as members. With this line-up, the album 'Protocol IV ' was recorded, which, like the previous albums , presents instrumental music in the genres of fusion / jazz-rock .

In 2016 he went on a world tour with the Japanese jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara and the bassist Anthony Jackson .

Phillips has also worked as a producer repeatedly in his career.
