Discovery is a studio album by the British artist Mike Oldfield from the year 1984 .
History of origin
Oldfield had the idea of putting a long instrumental piece together with sung songs on an album before with Platinum , Five Miles Out and Crises , and later with Islands and Heaven's Open ; However, this time The Lake is last and in contrast to the more than 20-minute works of the above-mentioned works only 12 min 11 s long.
Oldfield recorded the album in Switzerland and wrote in the booklet: “ Recorded in the Swiss Alps at 2000 meters within sight of Lake Geneva on sunny days ” (German: “Recorded in the Swiss Alps, 2000 meters above sea level, on sunny days View of Lake Geneva ”); this lake also inspired him to create The Lake .
Mike Oldfield used several guitars for recording, including a Gibson SG and a modified Gibson Les Paul Junior . As Synthesizer one was Roland GR-300 , and as the main instrument a Fairlight CMI used.
As a singer participated Barry Palmer of the German band triumvirate and already from the previous albums QE2 , Five Miles Out and Crises known Maggie Reilly . Ironically, the two never met in the studio despite a duet at Tricks of the Light , the parts were recorded separately. Simon Phillips took over the drums again and participated in the production of the album.
