Light + Shade is an album by British musician Mike Oldfield released on two CDs . It was the first album released after Mike Oldfield and Mercury Records signed the deal.

The album was released on September 26, 2005. Some of the titles on the two CDs were new releases. The other titles are alternative remixes from the soundtracks of his virtual reality based computer games Tres Lunas and Maestro .

background

The album offers two music genres for two different moods. This division caused Oldfield to split the music on two separate separate CDs. The first nine tracks are called "Light" (= light ;) and are serene and quieter pieces. The second half is called "Shade" (= shadow ) and transports a much darker feel. Many of the tracks on the album are remixes and / or longer versions of the music from his computer games Tres Lunas and Maestro.

Oldfield wrote on his official website that in addition to the standard recordings of the album, a surround sound 5.1 mix of the album was also produced. However, this was not published until 2014. Four tracks on the album were released in the U-MYX format, which allows fans to create their own mixes of these tracks.

Oldfield's penchant for altered human voices reappeared on the album , this time in the form of Vocaloid , a virtual software synthesizer that uses speech synthesis to create artificial vocals that resemble that of a human voice. For this, the voice "Miriam" was used, which is based on the voice of the singer Miriam Stockley , with whom Mike Oldfield had worked in the past. According to the Spanish website zm.nu, the vocaloid title Surfing should actually be the album's first single release. In "Tears of an Angel" "Miriam" can be heard using the Cantor software.

The titles First Steps and Ringscape were arranged by Robyn Smith . Christopher von Deylen has a guest appearance on Nightshade . Oldfield returned the favor by playing the guitar in Morgentau , a track on the album Tag und Nacht from Deylen's ambient music project Schiller .

Quicksilver stands for the metal mercury , the name of the record label Mercury means the same thing in the English language . On Oldfield's next album Music of the Spheres he repeats this title with the title name Musica Universalis , which translates into English for Universal Music .

The title Blackbird is named after one of Oldfield's motorcycles, a Honda CBR 1100 XX Blackbird.

The title Romance is a techno version of a fragment from the classical guitar piece of the same name from the 19th century.
