Man on the Rocks is the 25th studio album by British musician Mike Oldfield , released on March 3, 2014 on the Virgin EMI record label .

Recording and production

Man on the Rocks was created by Stephen Lipson with Mike Oldfield produced . In addition to Oldfield himself, the album features bassist Leland Sklar , drummer John Robinson , keyboardist Matt Rollings and guitarist Michael Thompson . The vocals are from Luke Spiller , the singer of the group The Struts, also under contract with Virgin EMI. Mike can be heard on guitar. The supporting tracks were recorded in June 2013 at Studio D at Village Studios , Los Angeles with producer Stephen Lipson; Oldfield attended these sessions on Skype . He recorded part of the album in his home studio in his home in the Bahamas .

The working title for the album was Rock . The title Irene was inspired by Hurricane Irene , which hit the Bahamas in 2011. The final track is a cover version of William McDowell's gospel title I Give Myself Away .

The album marked Oldfield's return to Virgin after leaving Virgin Records in the 1990s. The reason is the merger of Mercury Records UK and Virgin Records after the purchase of EMI by Universal Music .

Man on the Rocks was released on March 3, 2014. The release date was originally announced as January 27th. The album was on single CD , double CD, on colored (limited edition of 500 pieces) and black (standard edition) vinyl - records a double album, as download and as a box set released.

The two CDs of the Deluxe Edition contain the album and a second CD with the instrumental versions of the tracks. In the UK , the box set is available exclusively through mikeoldfieldofficial.com. In addition to all content from the Deluxe Edition, it also contains Oldfields demos of the titles and four alternative mixes of the titles. It also includes a 16-page book in CD format, four art cards and a certificate of authenticity .

Single "Sailing"

The first part of the album, which was broadcast publicly, was an excerpt from the track "Sailing" which was heard on the radio show by Stuart Maconie on BBC Radio 6 Music in November 2013. "Sailing" was first heard in full on BBC Radio 2 on January 14, 2014.

“Sailing” was the recording of the week on BBC Radio 2 in the first week of February 2014. The music video for “Sailing” was released on February 8, 2014 on YouTube . The video shows Oldfield and Spiller in the Bahamas on the beach, in a boat and in Oldfield's studio in his house.
