Kay Rothenpieler (born February 7, 1971 in Hamm ) is a former German handball player and handball coach who most recently worked for the second division ASV Hamm-Westfalen .

Player career

Kay Rothenpieler started playing handball at the age of seven. After several club changes, he came to OSC Thier Dortmund , where the right-winger was four times German youth champion. In 1987 he made his Bundesliga debut against THW Kiel in Dortmund's Westfalenhalle and later became the youngest Bundesliga scorer in OSC history at the age of 16. He then switched to TV Niederwürzbach , with whom he moved into the final of the DHB Cup 1990/91. All the more remarkable since Rothenpieler's career was coming to an end after a fire accident. With HSV Düsseldorf he reached the cup final again in 1995. He then returned to TVN, with whom he lost his third cup final in 1998. After he was supposed to take over the managerial post after the 1997/98 season, he was reactivated due to the failure of the regular outside Stéphane Joulin . At the end of the 1998/99 season, the injured Rothen player finally ended his active career.

Kay Rothenpieler played eleven international matches in the German national team , but never took part in an international tournament.

Coaching career

Since 2001 Rothenpieler was a trainer at ASV Hamm-Westfalen . His greatest success was promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2009/10 season . He then announced his retirement to work in his wife's company. After the dismissal of his successor Jens Pfänder in October 2010, he took over the coaching position again as well as the managerial position. For the 2011/12 season he installed Maik Machulla as a player-coach, but returned after only eight match days as a coach. After 14 years as a coach at ASV Hamm-Westfalen, he ended his career and took over the role of club manager. From the 2017/18 season until March 2020, he was again working as a coach and sports director at ASV Hamm-Westfalen.
