The Orchestral Tubular Bells is an orchestral version of Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells album, arranged and conducted by David Bedford , which was recorded in September 1974 by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra .
History of origin
After the great success of the original Tubular Bells album and the progressive rock wave that took place at the same time , in which there was more and more classical and orchestral arrangements, David Bedford had the idea of realizing the album with an orchestra. Oldfield reacted hesitantly, but Bedford bowed to him until he consented and picked up the guitar himself. Oldfield also co-produced and oversaw the editing.
Although the actual melodies were only edited orchestral, there are still other changes to the original: The use of vocal cords has been deleted in all respects; the instrument announcement and the so-called “moribund chorus” are missing (see Tubular Bells 2003 ). In various reviews, the album has been described as a soundtrack without a film, as the music unfolds in front of you like a film.
The album reached number 17 on the UK album charts.
Other versions
There are several versions of the Tubular Bells album . In contrast to the classic version, Oldfield's Tubular Bells 2003 is a complete revision of the first work, as Oldfield was no longer satisfied with the quality of his still most famous work after 30 years. There are also several arrangements by other artists, for example a guitar-only version of the Duo Sonare called Duo Sonare plays Mike Oldfield .
