The Bad Neustadt – Bischofsheim railway in Lower Franconia led from the town of what is now the Rhön-Grabfeld district to the small town of Bischofsheim an der Rhön , which had around 1300 inhabitants around 1900. It was popularly known as the "Böschamer Böhle" (Bischofsheimer Bähnle).

history

Train at the road through Wegfurt

By law of April 21, 1884, the Bavarian State Parliament approved the law for the construction and operation of a local railway that ran from Neustadt an der Saale station on the Schweinfurt – Meiningen railway line, which was opened in 1874, up the Brend valley and, after 19 kilometers, reached its destination at the foot reached the Bavarian Rhön .

Construction began in February 1884, and the Bavarian State Railroad was able to open operations on October 15, 1885 . More than half of the route was laid on public roads for reasons of economy. However, this led to numerous accidents, so that fairly soon larger sections were given their own track. Until recently, however, the through-road of Wegfurt remained in the street.

Traffic volume

Local train with DB 211 020-3 in Bischofsheim station (Rhön)

At first, the railway met their expectations. The freight traffic with basalt, wood and also lignite was particularly satisfactory.

The first timetable from 1885 only had two pairs of trains; In 1914 there were already four. Even in 1939 we only find three on weekdays, but five on Sundays. Even after the Second World War, five pairs of trains were offered again on Sundays. At the end of the 1950s, their number rose to eight or nine journeys on weekdays; there were also a few bus trips every day. In the 1957 summer timetable, it is noticeable that from Bad Neustadt in the evenings on weekdays at 10:22 p.m. and daily at 12:25 a.m., a railcar was used to Bischofsheim.

The economic development in the following period meant that this route was one of the most unprofitable in all of Bavaria; because the area is sparsely populated and has no major industrial plants. On May 27, 1989 the passenger and freight traffic was stopped.

Today only a short remnant of the railway line remains in the urban area of Bad Neustadt, on which the rail connections of the neighboring industrial companies are operated.

Usage today

The railway line is now used as an asphalt bike path.
