The Honda CBR 1100 XX is a motorcycle from the Japanese vehicle manufacturer Honda from the sport touring category , which was also marketed under its name Super Blackbird . The factory code is SC 35.

After its market launch in 1996, the CBR 1100 XX was the fastest production motorcycle in the world for two years. It was not until 1999 that the Suzuki Hayabusa 1300, which was introduced at the time, was able to surpass its top speed .

Technical specifications

drive

The liquid-cooled four - cylinder engine generates a nominal output of 112 kW (152 hp) and a maximum torque of 119 Nm at a speed of 7250 min −1 from a displacement of 1137 cm³ . The cylinder head of the transversely installed in- line engine has two overhead camshafts which control two intake and two exhaust valves per cylinder. The engine is structurally based on that of the Honda Fireblade (SC33), but has a bore that has been enlarged from Ø 71 mm to 79 mm. The pistons have a stroke of 58 mm.

The motorcycle accelerates from a standstill to 100 km / h in 2.8 s and to 200 km / h in 8.5 s. The top speed is 290 km / h.

Power transmission

The primary drive takes place via gear wheels. The power separation is made possible by a hydraulically operated multi-plate oil bath clutch, the torque conversion by a transmission with six gears. The secondary drive takes place via an O-ring chain .

Fuel supply

The mixture formation of the four-stroke engine has been controlled by a computer-controlled fuel injection known as Programmed Fuel Injection ( PGM-FI ) since 1999 . Each cylinder is ignited by a transistor-controlled spark plug.

The average fuel consumption is 5.9 l per 100 km at a speed of 130 km / h. The fuel tank has a volume of 23 liters, of which 4 liters are in reserve. The manufacturer recommends using petrol with a knock resistance of at least 95 octane.

The exhaust aftertreatment takes place from the Year 1999 by a three-way catalytic converter with secondary air system and below the pollutant limits the emission standard Euro-2.

landing gear

The chassis is built on an aluminum bridge frame and has a two-arm swing arm made of aluminum called ProLink. The central spring strut has a lever system with an adjustable spring base and rebound damping. The front wheel is guided by a telescopic fork with a diameter of 43 mm and a spring travel of 120 mm.

A double disc brake with 310 mm diameter decelerates on the front tire and a disc brake with 256 mm in the rear. Both brakes have Nissin calipers with three opposing pistons. A combined braking system called Dual-CBS supports the metering of the two brakes. An anti-lock braking system was not offered for the motorcycle.

Lighting and aerodynamics

CBR 1100 XX, model 1999

In terms of lighting and aerodynamics, the CBR1100XX was groundbreaking for many later motorcycle models. The indicators are aerodynamically integrated in the rear-view mirror, which was still unusual in the mid-1990s, but was later adopted on many other motorcycle models. In addition, the CBR1100XX was one of the first mass-produced motorcycles to have a headlight with two H7 lamps. In order to be able to accommodate one H7 lamp for the low beam and high beam at the same time, the two reflectors in the headlight were arranged one above the other. This arrangement ensures an overlapping cone of light and a light output that has long been unrivaled in motorcycles.

The fairing and attachments of the CBR1100XX are aerodynamically optimized for high speeds. Thus, the motorcycle driver with lying achieved a drag coefficient of 0.439, which was far below the values of comparable sports tourer that time.

Production numbers

The number of Super Blackbirds produced amounts to a total of 85,138 pieces. These are broken down into the individual production years as follows:

year number of pieces
1996 10,968
1997 15,959
1998 15,437
1999 12,925
2000 3,653
2001 9.091
2002 4,503
2003 3,581
2004 2,044
2005 2,875
2006 3,008
2007 1,094

Model history

At its launch in 1996, the CBR was 1100 XX with a rated output of 118 kW (160 hp) at a speed of 10,000 / min -1 , the most powerful production motorcycle in the world. In Germany, on the other hand, due to a manufacturer's self-restraint, the motorcycle was only offered in series in a version that was throttled to 72 kW (98 PS). An unregulated catalyst was available as an option.

The four 42 mm constant pressure carburetor of Keihin 1999 were replaced by a fuel injection system, whereby the choke (choke) was omitted. The injection system enabled the use of a three-way catalytic converter , which reduced the power to 112 kW (152 hp). An additional ram-air system, however, increased the output at high speeds to 120.5 kW (164 hp). The braking force distribution between the front and rear brakes was changed at the same time and the tank volume increased from 22 to 23 l. The number of friction discs in the clutch was reduced from nine to seven and the fork, taillight and ignition lock were changed.

The cockpit was revised in 2001 and the analog speedometer display was replaced with a digital one. The engine mapping was optimized in 2002 with a view to a smoother throttle response at low speeds. In 2005 the tank volume was reduced from 24 to 23 l.

The last CBR 1100 XX rolled off the assembly line in Japan in March 2007. Honda did not have a direct successor with comparable vehicle characteristics. A total of 13,378 CBR 1100 XX were approved in Germany. The CBR 1100 XX is named after the Lockheed SR-71 “Blackbird” (German: Amsel) reconnaissance aircraft .

CBR 1200

In 1999, on the occasion of the 50th company anniversary of Honda UK, a performance-enhanced version of the CBR 1100 XX was manufactured and sold in a small series under the name CBR 1200 . For this, series machines from the 1999 model year were refined through extensive tuning. So these machines received u. a. a displacement increased to 1198 cm³, high-performance pistons, revised camshafts, an Akrapovic exhaust system, a fully adjustable Penske shock absorber and a footrest system from LSL. The red / white paintwork was also noticeable on this model. However, this model was never mass-produced; according to unconfirmed information, only 25 of this version were completed, which can be recognized by a numbering sticker on the handlebar.

Reviews

“The Doppel-X is a handy and perfectly suitable athlete. It entered the stage in 1996 as the nimest production bike in the world, but soon found its real role as a lightning-fast, comfortable express tourer. "

- tourenfahrer.de

"The World Greatest Super Sport" was how Honda once advertised the CBR 1100 XX. The Super Blackbird was never super sporty, but it was a super fine power tourer that it still is today. "

- Thorsten Dentges : Motorrad , issue 22/2008

“The Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird is useable, comfortable, tidy handling sports tourer but also a ballistic power-house that used to hold the record as the fastest production motorcycle. The Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird is sensitive and utterly insane in one nicely presented Honda package. ”

“The Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird is a useful, comfortable, decent sports touring bike and at the same time a ballistic powerhouse that once held the record for the fastest production motorcycle. The Honda CBR 1100 XX Super Blackbird is sensible and extremely crazy in a beautifully presented Honda case. "
