I Should Have Known Better was released worldwide on October 26, 1984. The song tells from the perspective of the lyric self that the protagonist has cheated and is now asking for forgiveness. Such a similar interpretation can also be found in the George Michael classic Careless Whisper .

The hit is four minutes long and appeared on the album Double Crossed . Pip Williams co-produced alongside Jim Diamond.

In 1993 a second version followed on the self-titled fourth album. In contrast to the original version, Lyle was also a co-producer there.

Music video

The music video shows Jim Diamond with some studio musicians and the producer of the hit, Pip Williams, recording in a recording studio. During the recording, the producer feels guilty about cheating on his wife. In these sequences, Williams' wife and young daughter pull out of the house and get on the next train. Then the daughter storms the studio and she hugs her father, in the end his wife forgives him too.

The single. became a number one hit in the UK , Ireland and Australia , among others . For Jim Diamond, it was one of two top 10 hits and his only number one hit. Two years later, Hi Ho Silver reached number 8 on the UK charts.

After a week at number 1 on the charts, Jim Diamond asked not to buy his single, but instead the band-aid hit Do They Know It's Christmas? . In contrast to an article by Bob Geldof , The Power of Love by Frankie Goes to Hollywood replaced him at number 1 and Band Aid didn't follow until a week later.
