Careless Whisper is a pop - ballad that of George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley was written. First a single version with a length of 5:04 minutes appeared on July 24, 1984 under the name of George Michael , which became a number one hit in the USA, Great Britain and Switzerland, among others .

As a result, the title was also used in October 1984 under the name of the duo, Wham! , released on the album Make It Big in a 6:30 minute version. The succinct saxophone playing comes from the jazz musician Steve Gregory .

Emergence

The song was written by George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley in 1981 at a time when the two musicians were working with Wham! were not yet active. They recorded a demo that included Careless Whisper , Wham Rap , Club Tropicana and Come On . In doing so, they tried to find a record label that would publish these pieces. Michael, who was still working as a DJ at the time , played the piece on his last day at work and was surprised by the positive response from the audience. He was sure that the song would be a hit, but at first he didn't want to sing it himself because he didn't think he was talented enough. The song was finally released as a single only under the name of George Michael, as the record company was of the opinion that the song was not to Wham! pass.

From the perspective of the lyric self , the song tells of the fact that the protagonist has cheated and is now plagued by feelings of guilt. The text has no biographical background. George Michael remarked in an interview in 1990 that he was frightened how one could interpret so many meanings into such a superficial text, and described this fact as disillusioning for him as a songwriter. The music video was shot in Coconut Grove and Watson Island in Miami in June 1984 .
