A Night at the Roxbury is an American comedy film of John Fortenberry from the year 1998 .

action

In Los Angeles surviving brothers Doug and Steve Butabi work of her father Kamehl in the flower business and live with their parents. They often visit nightspots where they try to conquer women. The neighboring business is run by Fred Sanderson, who has a daughter, Emily, of marriageable age. Kamehl hopes one of his sons will marry Emily and run the business together.

The brothers damage their father's car, which leads to a family dispute. They meet Richard Grieco and come with him to the Roxbury nightclub . There they present some ideas to the club owner Benny Zadir. They get to know women who think the brothers are wealthy.

Steve is forced to marry Emily. His brother interrupts the wedding. A friend of Steve offers to marry Emily; she agrees. Richard Grieco speaks to Kamehl Butabi and promotes more understanding for his sons.

In the end, Zadir opens a new club. He used the ideas of the brothers who received shares in the club in the design.

Reviews

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of October 2, 1998 that the comedy was not only uncomfortable, but even pathetic (“ A Night at the Roxbury 'probably never had a shot at being funny anyway, but I don't think it planned to be pathetic ”). It is the first comedy he has seen that gives the feeling that laughter is cruel towards the characters.

Anita Gates wrote in the New York Times on October 2, 1998 that the film, like the brothers' characters, was "undoubtedly pathetic", but one could love it. The scene of the interrupted wedding is reminiscent of the films The Graduation and Jerry Maguire - Game of Life . The director, who used to work for television, “probably did the best he could do with the characters”.

The lexicon of international films judged: "Extremely mindless and pointless comedy without a solid plot and sparkling gags."

The rating of Cinema was somewhat more benevolent : “Director John Fortenberry certainly does little more than constantly vary the gag at the disco entrance. But before that gets annoying, the film is over. "

background

The characters have their origins in the "Roxbury Guys" of the comedy show Saturday Night Live , in which, in addition to the main characters Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan, guests such as Jim Carrey and Tom Hanks could be seen.

The film was shot in the Los Angeles area. Its production amounted to an estimated 17 million US dollars . The film grossed approximately $ 30.3 million in US cinemas.

A special role plays the song What Is Love by Haddaway in the film: In the beginning of the song in the background can be heard, while the brothers in different nightspots try their luck with women and rhythmically shake their heads to the song. Later Doug interrupts the wedding of Steve and Emily by a boom box turns and there What Is Love happens.

The rhythmic wobbling of the head became a meme on the Internet, but it was created before the film as a result of the skits on Saturday Night Live . A well-known parody that refers to the movie, shows the then Microsoft - CEO Bill Gates with the former Microsoft president Steve Ballmer .
