Make It Big is the second studio album by British pop duo Wham! . It was released on October 23, 1984 by Epic Records / Columbia Records .
Creation and publication
The album was largely recorded at the Miraval studio in the south of France to escape the press and allow George Michael to work in peace. It was mixed at Good Earth Studios in London and Marcadet Studios in Paris from July to September 1984, with the first two singles Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go and Careless Whisper already being released in May and July. The third single, Freedom , was also released in advance on October 1, 1984.
Compared to previous productions, the group members had more influence on the music as George Michael became the sole producer, a position he would later hold on all future releases until the group disbanded in 1986.
reception
The album was a number one commercial success in both the UK and the US. In Germany it reached number five, in Austria number four and in Switzerland also number one on the hit list there. It also became a number one success in countries such as the Netherlands , Norway and New Zealand . Four singles were released, all of which topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
The critics also praised the album. Outside the US, Careless Whisper was released as a single as a solo single by George Michael, while Everything She Wants was released as a double A-side with Last Christmas , which later appeared on the following album, Music from the Edge of Heaven .
The album was certified six-way platinum in the US shortly after the album's tenth anniversary in 1994.
