The track was produced by Bob Clearmountain and Jimmy Iovine . After its release in the UK in September 1986 , the song became a hit, reaching number 10 on the UK charts. Subsequently, the song was released in the United States and a hit there too, the song reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 . In the United States, it was the Pretenders' second Top 10 success after reaching number 5 with Back on the Chain Gang in early 1983 .

Don't Get Me Wrong became more pop and commercial than the previous releases, with an acoustic guitar and a pop melody. However, the text was more serious than its previous material.

The song was heard in the 1986 intro to Gung Ho and in 1997 in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion . In 2010 the song appeared on the soundtrack album for the film Going the Distance .
