Allmusic critic Matthew Greenwald found the song to have “an elegant melody surrounded by folk-like chords ” and “striking instrumental sections”. Greenwald also praised Clapton's guitar playing and the clever use of the words "rain" and "reign" (rule), as the song is mainly about love . The song was played many times on the radio in the 1970s. In 1972 the single was number 48 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained in the US singles chart for a total of 13 weeks.
