The Eric Clapton World Tour of 2009 [ ˈɛrɪk klæptɒn wɜːld tʊə ] ( English for: "Eric Clapton World Tour") was a concert tour by British rock musician Eric Clapton . The tour began on February 12, 2009 in Osaka and ended on June 30, 2009 in Los Angeles . As part of the tour, the Brit invited some musical guests who also returned several times during the tour. Clapton repeated this principle from 2010 to 2011 .
In 2009 the British guitarist toured the continents of Asia, Europe, North America and Oceania again after a long time. The performances in Australia and New Zealand marked rare concerts for Clapton in this region. In total, the Brit and his band were on tour intensively for four months and performed more than 40 times. Clapton also visited the United Kingdom, Japan , Ireland and the United States .
Tour events
The Japan leg of the tour was announced on November 27, 2008. The concerts in the Super Arena in Saitama with Jeff Beck were added to the calendar on January 6th. Clapton began the tour on February 12th in Osaka and toured the country of Japan until February 28th. The highlight of the concerts in Asia were the two appearances that Clapton and Beck played in the sold-out arena in Saitama in front of over 65,000 spectators. It was the first Beck and Clapton concert that did not take place during a festival. At the beginning of March, the Briton traveled to New Zealand for a sold-out concert and had three sold-out performances in Australia. The concert in Melbourne was originally scheduled to take place on March 11th, but was brought forward one day.
At the beginning of March, Clapton's concerts that were to take place in Europe were also announced. Support groups and guests who would perform with Clapton were also named. In order to maximize ticket sales in Europe, public tenders and competitions were held for the concerts. Except for the concert in Manchester, all events were sold out here too. On May 19, 2009, Clapton's concert made its 150th appearance at London's Royal Albert Hall. He was the record holder as the artist with the most appearances in the arena. In 2014 the Brit reached another milestone in the hall. The Europa-Leg ended on May 31st. On February 11th, the US tour with Steve Winwood was announced from June 10th to 30th . These concerts were also almost sold out.

Setlist
During the entire tour, Clapton changed his setlist for individual sections. During the Japan tour in February 2009, the British rock musician performed mainly a mixture of blues titles such as Hoochie Coochie Man , Key to the Highway and Driftin 'Blues, as well as successful pieces such as Running on Faith , Wonderful Tonight and Layla . However, the Briton varied his selection of blues titles steadily. During Clapton's appearances in a double cast with Beck in Saitama, the Briton cut his setlist by half and performed classic blues pieces and hits from his repertoire together with Beck. Before that, Beck played his material. For his concerts in Oceania, Clapton kept the setlist principle of solo appearances, but varied less.
As part of the European part of the concert tour, Clapton no longer played 18 or more pieces during a concert, but often only 16 pieces including encores. In Europe, the British singer only got involved in one encore per evening. At the end of the tour in North America, Clapton now presented each setlist together with Winwood. The Briton no longer performed as many blues pieces compared to his solo shows and instead chose material such as Presence of the Lord , Had to Cry Today or Dear Mr. Fantasy from his time with Blind Faith . Here, too, Clapton only performed one encore, but now played 22 pieces per concert. A concert lasted between two and two and a half hours.

Memorabilia
In the course of the world tour, there were a large number of fan articles and rare memorabilia that were sold shortly before and after the concerts. During the Japan Leg, visitors were able to purchase an official tour program (all concerts after the end of the tour), jackets , baseball caps , accessories for mobile phones , tote bags and T-shirts . When Clapton was holding his concerts in Japan, it was also possible during that period to purchase a limited edition black colored T-shirt with the Duck Records logo and a Japanese headband from Clapton's internet store worldwide. A variety of printed coffee mugs and concert posters were also available and strictly limited.
reception
Rolling Stone critic Daniel Kreps described the initial concerts of the Japan tour as "smoking [and] brilliant [...]". New Zealand Herald journalist Matt Greenop had nothing but positive commentsabout Clapton's concert at the Vector Arena. He's critics praised Clapton's performance of blues, pop and rock songs in one evening. The British musician's guitar playing was "understandable, clear, competent [and] fantastic". The band with whom Clapton performed that evening was also praised by Greenop. According to the journalist, it is “perfectly suited” to the atmosphere and the artist. The only negative point of criticism, Greenop noted, was that the Brit should have played more songs, "especially when the ticket price went up to an almost criminal $ 399".
According to Billboard magazine , the reunion with Winwood in the United States was a complete success, but very debilitating for Clapton, who has struggled to adapt to the new setlist, according to journalists. Nevertheless, the publication praised the joint appearances and the selection of songs and noted that the concerts left the audience with a “great appetite”.
