Before You Accuse Me (also Before You Accuse Me (Take a Look at Yourself) ) is a blues song written by Bo Diddley and released in 1958. Eric Clapton made the song popular in 1989.

background

Diddley wrote the song in August 1957 and released it in February of the following year. The song was released as a single with B-side Say! Boss Man and released on Diddley's album of the same name (1958). The cast on the original recording consisted of Diddley himself as singer and guitar , Jody Williams as second guitarist, Willie Dixon on bass and Frank Kirkland on drums .

Eric Clapton's adaptation

On November 18, 1989, Eric Clapton released the piece for the first time on his album Journeyman . The single reached number nine in the US mainstream rock charts in 1990. The album sold 2.5 million times. Clapton performed the song on his Journeyman World Tour and on 1990 at the Knebworth charity concert . On August 18, 1992 the song appeared again on Clapton's live album Unplugged . It has sold more than 16 million copies. Another rendition of the song was released on Clapton's album Blues in 1999 .

More cover versions

The rock band 13th Floor Elevators recorded a version of the song in 1968 for their album Live . A cover of Creedence Clearwater Revival was released on Cosmo's Factory in 1970 . The band recorded the piece back in 1968, but only released the version on the 40th Anniversary Edition of the album. In 2013 Eric Burdon interpreted the piece for the publication 'Til Your River Runs Dry .
