The rest of the Volkerode castle complex is in the municipality of Volkerode (Steinweg 2) in the Eichsfeld district in Thuringia .

history

This small Romanesque hill fort is located on a higher sandstone rock in the center of the village. The complex consists of a defense tower ( residential tower ), the later bower , a mansion , the later castle as well as a bakery and a surrounding curtain wall .

The defense tower dates from the 12th century and has been rebuilt several times over the years to suit the circumstances. Its architectural styles are Romanesque , Late Gothic and Renaissance . The last changes were made to the bower in the 19th century. The tower was covered with a gable roof. The half-timbered mansion was also built on medieval cellar vaults. The entire property was inhabited and managed until the 20th century.

In 2009 it was bought by the municipality of Volkerode and a newly founded "Förderverein Volkeröder Schloß eV" has been taking care of the maintenance and renovation of the buildings since then. A jamb floor was added to the defense tower in 2013 and new external and internal stairs were installed.

owner

The Martinsstift zu Heiligenstadt owned goods in Volkerode in 1227, which knight Heinrich von Berckenfeld had previously owned. It is not known whether it was this farm. The owners of the place were the knights of Volkerode, where they also exercised jurisdiction. Under the overlordship of the Archbishops of the Electorate of Mainz in 1547, the imperial officer Conrad von Hanstein is proven to be the owner of the fief; A coat of arms stone has been preserved from him. The von Volkerode lived here until the middle of the 17th century. In 1661 the lords of Harstall are the owners, then those of Weihers. After 1815 the owners changed more frequently until the municipality of Volkerode finally bought the castle in 2009.
