The coat of arms of the von Harstall

Harstall is an old Thuringian noble family based in the Werra valley between Eisenach and Mühlhausen .

history

In the 14th century, the noble von Harstall family was first mentioned with a gangloff from Harstall. The extent to which the family is connected to the "Wüstung Harstall" near Mihla has not been proven. In 1436 they took over the Mihla moated castle built by the local ruling family of Mihla. After that they expanded their influence and possessions from their headquarters in the Werra Valley and several subsidiary lines formed:

  • Mihlaer Linie, died in 1610 with Ernst Christoph von Harstall
  • Diedorf line from around 1500, continued as a Catholic line after the Reformation and expired in 1865
  • Creuzburg line
  • Hessian and Rhenish branches.

Further possessions existed in Wernershausen , Katharinenberg , Berteroda and Treffurt. They were enfeoffed among others by the dukes of Saxony, the electors of Mainz and the Fulda bishops and were temporarily lords of Burg Creuzburg and Burg Normannstein .

In 1536 the von Harstall family rebuilt the moated castle as a renaissance castle, the Gray Castle , built the White Castle immediately next to it and in 1581 the Red Castle .
