Johann Christoph von Harstall was Electorate Mainz Vice Cathedral in Erfurt and owner of several manors in Thuringia .

He came from the Thuringian noble family von Harstall and was the son of Wilhelm von Harstall. From 1610 to 1613 he studied law at the University of Erfurt , where he also received his doctorate. When he returned to Thuringia, he took over his manor from his father's inheritance. Due to his financial strength, he saved the neighboring von Seebach family from an emergency and in 1625 bought two thirds of their heavily indebted manor Kammerforst , the so-called Oberhof. He was also heir, feudal lord and court lord on Bernterode, Katharinenberg and Mihla . In the latter place he took care of the expansion of the Red Castle .

From approx. 1620 to 1620 he was the Electorate of Mainz in Erfurt, but had to flee from there to his relatives in Eisenach due to the Swedish occupation . He later moved to Heiligenstadt and did not return to Erfurt until 1635.

On September 24, 1613 he married Maria Magdalena von Kerpen, the sister of Johann Walter von Kerpen .
