The 2014 Eric Clapton World Tour [ ˈɛrɪk klæptɒn wɜːld tʊə ] was a four month concert tour by British rock musician Eric Clapton . The tour began in Tokyo on February 18, 2014 and ended in Auschwitz on June 28 of the same year . The tour included a total of 20 concerts on three continents and generated revenues of more than 22 million US dollars . Over 240,000 spectators bought concert tickets for the events held.

Although Clapton already extensively presented the album Old Sock on his 50th Anniversary World Tour , the performances in 2014 also served as advertising for the release. Of the 20 concerts, one in Thailand was canceled. The concerts in New Orleans and Auschwitz were part of various music festivals that Clapton attended as the star of the evening ("Headline Performer").

Tour events

The first concert of the tour marked the 40th anniversary of the British musician's Japan concert series. The concert, held on February 18, 2014, coincided with the Clapton's 200th performance in Japan. With 207 appearances in Japan by the end of the world tour, Clapton is the international record holder with the most appearances in the land of the rising sun. The concert planned for March 2, 2014 in the Impact Arena of Muang Thong Thani in Bangkok was canceled due to management problems and postponed to a later, unknown date. There was no opening act during the Asia Leg . Some recordings as well as interviews and travel events were published on October 31, 2014 on Planes, Trains and Eric .

Clapton's first performance in the United States was on April 27, 2014 during the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival . He and his band performed on the main stage, the “Acura Stage”, at the end of the first festival weekend. He was followed by the music group Fredy Omar con Su Banda. The support band ZZ Ward performed for his next three shows. On May 2, 2014, Clapton planned to play Accuse Me or Gin House as the twelfth track on his setlist . Shortly before that, however, Clapton decided to perform his world hit Wonderful Tonight .

On June 21, 2014, during his performance at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow , Clapton put down his guitar in the piece during Cocaine's performance and left the stage without explanation. Clapton's band, visibly surprised, followed him. After two minutes, Clapton took the stage and apologized with the sentence: I'm sorry ("Sorry about that"). Although the track was not played to the end, Clapton gave his encore at the end of the hour and a half concert. Later press releases stated that there was a technical problem with the public address system . The group Hunter & the Bear opened the two concerts in the UK before Clapton and his band performed. Clapton's only concert in Germany in the SAP Arena in Mannheim was sold out within a few months. The Haller group from Mannheim performed as the opening act. Clapton dedicated the final concert of his tour during the Life Festival Oświęcim to Bobby Womack , who died the day before the performance.

Setlist

The songs on the program list changed very rarely during the entire tour. Clapton and his band mainly played a mixture of old hits that Clapton recorded and performed with the band Derek and the Dominos , blues titles from Clapton's childhood and youth, to world hits that Clapton recorded as a solo artist. Some popular songs that were played during the concerts are Cocaine , Crossroads , Hoochie Coochie Man , Layla , Pretending and Tears in Heaven . As an encore, the title High Time We Went was performed by Joe Cocker .
