Al-Muharraq ( Arabic المحرق, DMG al-Muḥarraq ) is a port city in Bahrain and one of the state's five governorates . As of the April 27, 2010 census, the city had a population of 189,114. Ten years earlier it was only 104,922. The urban area (governorate) extends over 57.46 km². The city is located northeast of the capital al-Manama on the island of the same name al-Muharraq with its sub-islands . There is a road embankment that leads from Muharraq to the main island of Bahrain . The Bahrain International Airport is located in the city.

The formerly independent city of al-Hidd in the southeast of the island has been a district of al-Muharraq since July 3, 2002, when the ten municipalities were replaced by five governorates. Other districts are

Al-Muharraq was the capital of Bahrain until 1923 and is still an important religious center of the country today.

Pearl fishing was an important industry in the city , and related sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2012.
