The Fair Grounds Race Course , also known as the New Orleans Fair Grounds , is a horse racing track and casino in New Orleans .

history

The first horse races took place here in 1839. 13 years later, a race track with a main building and stables was built on the site of the previously improvised horse track. It is the third oldest racetrack of its type and function in the United States . Since then, the track has been the venue for a wide variety of horse competitions in the USA. In 1921 the only car race to date took place on the site. In 1971 the Fair Grounds Racing Hall of Fame was opened. In 1981 the railway was renovated and expanded.

The area is also the venue for the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival .
