Background and recording

The song goes back to an eight-page poem by Pete Brown allegedly written during a time when he was recovering from bad habits. The band began recording White Room in July or August 1967 in London, where the base of the song was recorded.

In September and October, during a two-week stint at Cafe A Gogo in New York , the group continued to record at Atlantic Studios. There he made overdubs , with the exception of the wah-wah overdubs , which was recorded in New York in January or February 1968th The last recordings were made in June 1968. The drummer Ginger Baker claims to have contributed the distinctive 5/4 time to the composition, which was originally only in 4/4 time. On the other hand, Jack Bruce said that he wrote the introduction in 5/4 time due to his experience as a bassist and that he still has the original sheet music to this day.

Jack Bruce sang and played bass on the recording, Eric Clapton played several guitar passages . Ginger Baker played drums and Felix Pappalardi , the band's producer , played the violin . Clapton used wah-wah effects to create a speaking effect .
