Jimmy Ponder

Jimmy "Fats" Ponder (* 10. May 1946 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ; † 16th September 2013 ) was an American jazz - guitarist .

Live and act

Ponder began playing guitar at the age of 14 and was initially heavily influenced by Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell . At the age of 17 he played with Charles Earland ; in the following years in the soul jazz bands of Lou Donaldson , Houston Person , Donald Byrd , Stanley Turrentine and Jimmy McGriff . He moved to Philadelphia and in the 1970s to New York City , where he recorded a number of albums under his own name, starting with the 1969 album Soul Crib , on which Charles Earland also participated. In 1976/77 he also recorded two albums for the Impulse label ! on, Illusions and White Room . He was successful with his album All Things Beautiful , which he recorded in 1978 for Muse Records; it reached # 98 on the Billboard Jazz Albums Chart . His album Ain't Misbehavin , recorded for High Note with Don Braden and John Hicks in 2000 , hit # 16 on the jazz charts. Ponder died in September 2013 of complications from lung cancer .
