The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg , Manitoba that was successful around 1970. With the hit American Woman , they became the first Canadian group to top the US charts in 1970 .

Band history

Originally the group founded by Chad Allan in Winnipeg in 1958 was called "Chad Allan & the Expressions". With the enigmatic name "Guess Who?" (Eng. Guess who? ) The record company tried in 1965 to attract national attention, which it succeeded.

Over time, the band's sound changed towards hard rock . In 1969 she had her first top ten hit with These Eyes . 1970 No Time followed (number 5 in the US) and the global hit American Woman ( number 1 in the US). At the time, the band consisted of Burton Cummings (vocals - he had replaced Chad Allan in 1965), Randy Bachman (guitar), Jim Kale (bass) and Garry Petersen (drums).

In 1970 Bachman left the group and was later able to celebrate successes with Bachman-Turner Overdrive . In 1974, The Guess Who had a million-seller with Clap for the Wolfman , a song about American disc jockey Wolfman Jack .

After several line-up changes, the band broke up in 1975. However, a new edition is still active today. In 1987 the band was honored with the induction into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame .
