Iron Butterfly (English for "iron butterfly") is an American rock band that was founded in San Diego in 1966 and achieved world fame in 1968 with their album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and the title track of the same name .

history

The debut album Heavy was released in 1968 and stayed in the charts for almost a year. Shortly afterwards, the founding members DeLoach, Penrod and Weis left the band. Penrod and Weis formed the band Rhinoceros .

One of the classics of rock music was created by chance on May 27, 1968 in the New York recording studio Ultrasonic Sound . Sound engineer Don Casale ran the tape for the sound check when the group In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida wanted to practice. The drunk music producer George Morton was intended as a producer, but he was later not mentioned by Atlantic Records on the liner notes of the LP. The 17:05 minute long version of the album was recorded in just one take ; another take was no longer necessary. Jim Hilton made a remix of this in the Gold Star Studios and has since been officially named as the producer. The single version was then edited to 2:52 minutes. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida filled the entire B-side of the LP of the same name in its long version.

Organist and singer Doug Ingle and drummer Ron Bushy were present for the recordings for the album In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida with two new members, guitarist Erik Brann and bassist Lee Dorman . The seventeen-minute track of the same name on the second side of the LP, unusually long for the time, unsuitable for radio stations , became a milestone and classic of rock music. The LP In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida , released in July 1968, sold over four million times, stayed in the top ten for over a year and made rock history with its long drum solo. Originally the song was supposed to be called In the Garden of Eden ; According to the cover text of the best-of- CD, Ron Bushy was listening to the piece on headphones, so he understood Doug Ingles answer to the question about the title as In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and wrote the text under the notes. Different rumors, however, attribute the misunderstanding to different drugs that Ingle is said to have been under during the period.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida was a milestone in the development of hard rock and, at seventeen minutes, one of the first pieces of rock music to cover an entire page. Iron Butterfly could never repeat this success. The fourteen-minute title Butterfly Bleu , a demanding blues adaptation with psychedelic elements, was thought to be the successor and remained far behind the level of awareness of its predecessor. This track appeared on the album Metamorphosis , when Brann had left the band when it was recorded and was replaced by guitarists Mike Pinera and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt.

The band broke up at the end of May 1971. Lee Dorman founded the band Captain Beyond with Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt, Rod Evans (ex- Deep-Purple -I) and Bobby Caldwell (ex- Johnny-Winter ) , which in 1972 released the Duane Allman memorial album of the same name.

In 1975, Iron Butterfly was reformed by Ron Bushy and Erik Brann, who now mentions his real name Erik Braunn and Philip Taylor Kramer (bass) and Howard Reitzes (keyboard). The album Scorching Beauty was released with this line-up . In the follow-up album Sun and Steel , which was released in the same year , Reitzes was replaced by Bill de Martines. After these very demanding albums also fell through the charts, the band broke up again in 1976.

In the course of the "Sixties Revival" at the end of the 1980s, it was re-established. The band also went on tour later. In addition to Ron Bushy and bassist Lee Dorman, Martin Gerschwitz (keyboard) and Charlie Marinkovich were most recently part of the band.

Philip Taylor Kramer committed suicide on February 12, 1995, Erik Brann died on July 25, 2003 of a heart attack and Larry "Rhino" Reinhardt on January 2, 2012 of cirrhosis of the liver. Lee Dorman died on December 21, 2012.
