Old Sock is the 19th studio album by British rock musician Eric Clapton and was released on March 12, 2013 on his own label Bushbranch Records.
Background information
The album features cover versions of Clapton's favorite songs from his childhood to the present. Only Gotta Get Over and Every Little Thing were written specifically for this album. There were many guest musicians, including Paul McCartney , Steve Winwood and JJ Cale . It was the last work by the musician JJ Cale, who died in 2013. The cover photo, a self-portrait showing Clapton in a hat, was taken with his iPhone in Antigua . The album title came about after a conversation with David Bowie . Bowie referred to Clapton as "Old Sock" (old sock). In the United States, the album was also available in Starbucks stores shortly after its release .

Criticism
Allmusic critic Stephen Thomas Erlewine described the album as “not a bad one” but also as “not a great one”. He added that it was a good album to while away your time. He assigned 3.5 out of five evaluation units. American Songwriter's critic Hal Horowitzawarded the album four out of five possible stars and praised the album's two newly written songs. Exclaim.ca's Jason Schneiderfound that Clapton lost his identity on the album. He awarded the grade "3" for Old Sock . Musicimh.com critic Andy Babercalled the album a Clapton return and thinks Old Sock is good to listen to. He awarded two and a half stars for the album. Popmatters critic Philip Majorins thinks that Clapton is far from retiring after this album and awarded five out of ten rating units for the studio album. Nick Coleman of The Independent gave the album three out of five stars. Paul Mardles from The Guardian commented negatively on the album: " Still Got the Blues is the only song that is filled with love." And awarded one of five stars. Will Hermes from Rolling Stone comments on the album: "If it sounds a little too comfortable at times, Clapton deserves it". Hermes awarded the album three out of five stars. Pete Clark of the London Evening Standard awarded the album three points. Andy Gill of The Independent on Sunday thinks that Clapton's rock star life is gone after relaxing in the Caribbean for too long and has given Old Sock two out of five stars.
Chart success
The album reached number 15 in the German album charts and stayed in the charts for a total of 13 weeks. In Austria and Switzerland, the album was in seventh and eleventh place. In the UK charts it was # 13. In the US, it reached # 7 on the Billboard 200 , # 1 on the top independent album charts and number three on the top rock album charts. In Canada, the album reached number twelve on the top Canadian album charts.
