Nikka Costa (* 4. June 1972 in Tokyo as Domenica Costa ) is an American singer and songwriter . She is the daughter of the late guitarist , arranger and music producer Don Costa .

Life

Nikka Costa was born in Tokyo when her father was visiting a music festival there. She grew up in Los Angeles , where she came into contact with music early on through her father's activities. Already in 1981 she recorded her first single (Out Here) On My Own in Italy , a song from the musical film Fame - The Path to Fame . The song was produced by her father Don Costa , who also accompanied her on guitar. The single reached top positions in the charts in several European countries. In the same year her first album Nikka Costa was released , which was equally successful. Both records, as well as other singles from the album, were only released in Europe and South America.

Her first and until 2001 only record release in the USA was the single To Love a Child ( Reprise Records ), also arranged and produced by her father, in 1982 , a duet with her godfather Frank Sinatra , for whom her father has been arranging and regularly since 1961 Orchestra conductor had been active. Also in 1982 she appeared in front of 300,000 spectators in the opening act of the group The Police at a concert in Chile and thus increased her popularity in South America.

After Don Costa's death in January 1983, which Nikka Costa addressed in 2005 in the song Fatherless Child , her second album Fairy Tales (Cuentos de Hadas) was released in Europe and South America , which was also arranged by her father. Nikka Costa then withdrew from the music business for a few years before she released the album Here I Am (Yes, It's Me) in Europe in 1989 , which includes a duet with Pierre Cosso on Don't Cry . Costa also released this album in a Spanish version called Loca Tentación , which was released in South America. In 1990 she performed the song All for the Love , the English version of the piece Vattene Amore by Mietta and Amedeo Minghi , at the Sanremo Festival in Italy.

In the early 1990s, Nikka Costa moved to Australia for a few years , where she released her album Butterfly Rocket in 1996 , which made it into the top 20 of the Australian charts and earned her a nomination for the best young female artist at the Australian record industry's annual awards. In the same year the concert recording Live at the Bridge was made . At the end of the 1990s, Costa then moved back to the USA.

In 2001 Costa made her breakthrough as a singer and songwriter in the USA with the album Everybody Got Their Something ( Virgin Records ). For the song Just Because she worked with soul singer Billy Preston ; for the song Like a Feather she was nominated in the same year at the MTV Video Music Awards for the price in the category "Best Young Artist in a Music Video". Her song Push and Pull , also included on the album and written together with her husband , was presented at a Prince concert in Las Vegas in 2003 . In the same year Costa was also heard on the album Here Comes the Fuzz by Mark Ronson with the title of the same name.

In 2005 the album Can'tneverdidnothin ' (Virgin) followed, with which she further expanded her musical style between rhythm & blues , soul and funk . In it she is accompanied on drums by Lenny Kravitz in the piece Till I Get to You , with whom she went on tour in spring 2005. Lenny Kravitz contributed further guitar and bass parts, together with the guitarist Craig Ross, known from his band .

In 2006 she recorded the duet Mean Sleep with the singer Van Hunt , which can be heard on Van Hunt's album On the Jungle Floor . In the same year, the two recorded the track If I Had No Loot together with Sam Moore for his album Overnight Sensational .

On October 14, 2008, the album Pebble to a Pearl was released in America , which was later released in Europe and Australia. The European version of the album has a bonus track that Costa published on her MySpace page back in 2007 ; it's a cover version of The Denial Twist by the White Stripes .

From the end of May to mid-July 2010, Costa appeared in the support act of the singer Pink on her Funhouse Summer Carnival Tour. In addition, the single Ching Ching Ching was released in early June . In Germany it was her first chart success since (Out Here) On My Own . In addition, Nikka Costa acted as background singer for Eric Clapton on the album Clapton in 2010 and also wrote his song Diamonds Made from Rain .
