Can't Let You Do It [ kɑːnt lɛt juː duː ɪt ] (in English : “Can't let you do it”) is a title from the pen of the American musician JJ Cale from the genres of rock and pop rock . The British rock musician Eric Clapton interpreted the piece in his 2016 published studio album I Still Thu .

History and music

In an interview with the American music magazine Guitar World , Clapton explained how he came to record the title. When the Briton arrived for JJ Cale's funeral in 2013, Clapton spoke extensively with Cale's widow Christine Lakeland about songs and demos that Cale recorded but not released. "I am very interested in hearing his entire legacy," said Clapton among other things. Lakeland noted that she had some previously unreleased recordings of Cale. After a week, Clapton received two compact discs with about 20 unknown songs. The Brit stated that he had put the sound carriers safely in a safe , as the recordings meant a lot to him.

Can't Let You Do It is about a man from middle society who does not want to belong to the higher elite through his new female acquaintance and does not allow any change. The piece was written and recorded in E major blues . Clapton recorded the song and said that the original version was "inimitable".

Other contributors to Clapton's interpretation of the song are Dave Bronze on bass guitar , Henry Spinetti on drums , Andy Fairweather Low as rhythm guitarist , Paul Carrack , Chris Stainton , Simon Climie and Walt Richmond on keyboards , Dirk Powell on accordion and harmonica and Michelle John and Sharon White as backing singers .

Publication and Success

The song was released as the first release from the album I Still Do on March 27, 2016 by the Polydor label. Initially, the release was only available on the music streaming services Spotify , Deezer and Apple Music . On April 11, 2016, the single was also released as a digital music download in various Internet platforms such as Amazon Music .

In the single charts of the regions of Flanders and Wallonia , the piece was placed in the Ultratip overviews, in which the single stayed for four weeks. In Poland the single reached number 39 on the airplay charts.

Critic Jon M. Gilbertson of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says the piece reflects part of Clapton's career because it is so "tough" and "steamy". Journalist Graham Reid of the New Zealand Herald newspaper thinks that Can't Let You Do It is more of a swamp music song , but the band and Clapton “gave everything on the recording”. Bruno Jaschke from the Wiener Zeitung praised the typical Tulsa sound, which Clapton can feel very similar to Cale. He rated the interpretation as a “mature achievement”. According to the Mittelbayerische Zeitung , Clapton "rolled out his wonderful groove carpet [...]". Critic Max Fellmann from the Süddeutsche Zeitung heard in the song "angular blues radio, just a little freshly cleaned out [...]".
